Moisture

When was the last time you looked in the crawl space of your home in the summer months? Years ago we heard “open your vents in the summer and close them in the winter” For the most part that is not the case, it turned out to be a myth, due in part to the fact that older homes didn’t have central air and most had either larger overhangs or gutters.

you looked in the crawl space of your home in the summer months? Years ago we heard “open your vents in the summer and close them in the winter” For the most part that is not the case, it turned out to be a myth, due in part to the fact that older homes didn’t have central air and most had either larger overhangs or gutters.

In some instances we buy older homes that weren’t designed to have central air therefore the vents are more than eight feet apart unlike those built under current building codes. Many homeowners install insulation and new a/c systems; when combined these two could cause health and structural issues. In other situations decks are built on or around the home, not realizing this gives moisture beneath the home no place to go but up! Finally there are cases where we feel our a/c units are not cool enough, or we add onto our homes as our families grow so we go for a larger unit not realizing what affect it is having underneath our homes.

There are many solutions to fix these problems; every home is designed differently which means that the system to correct your moisture problem has to be designed for your home.
With ABC being locally owned and operated our methods are designed for “local conditions” not from a corporate office policy.

Below is a list of items you can easily check in and around your home, if any of these conditions are present, contact our office for a free inspection and moisture remediation program tailored to your specific home and situation:

  •  mold around light plates
  •  mold or stains around the top of the ceiling
  •  musty smell after rains or after A/C working overtime
  •  a rush of cold air when opening your crawl space door
  •  fallen insulation — before you replace it give us a call sometimes insulation acts like a sponge and holds the moisture up into the floor joists
